About

Modern office lobby featuring mid-century furniture and large windows.

We review the Everyday Versions, Not Just the Icons

Original mid-century designer furniture can run into the thousands. So can today’s best reproductions — a high price tag doesn’t tell you much on its own. Quality varies wildly, even among retailers charging similar amounts, which is exactly why the Grain rating exists.

The Tapered Room exists to tell you which of these pieces are actually worth buying. We visit the showroom for every piece we cover, then score it two ways: our own hands-on Grain rating, and The Assembly – an aggregated rating from people who bought and live with the piece themselves.

Started by Two People Tired of Guessing

The Tapered Room is run by Jonathan Lazoff and Chelsea Cervantes. We started it because we couldn’t find honest reviews of mid-century furniture anywhere — just recycled marketing copy dressed up as editorial, or five-star reviews on the retailer’s own site.

The moment that actually pushed us to do this: we bought a well-reviewed sofa that turned out to be a real disappointment once we actually lived with it — the quality and comfort just didn’t hold up the way the reviews promised. We didn’t want anyone else to spend that kind of money on the same kind of surprise. We wanted a place that combined real hands-on expertise with honest input from the people actually living with these pieces.

We do earn a commission on some of the links here — see our Affiliate Disclosure — but it never decides the score. A piece gets the same Grain rating whether or not we make anything from the sale, and we’d rather you trust the number than click a link.

Chelsea Cervantes

Style, History & Wear

Chelsea focuses on the aesthetic and historical side of every piece — how faithful it is to the original design, how it styles in a real room, and what the showroom floor model reveals about durability: fading, pilling, and finish wear from months of real customer use.

Build Quality & Construction

Jonathan gets into the construction: leather quality and grain, joinery, frame materials, and whether a piece is actually built to last or just built to photograph well.

How We Score Every Piece

The Grain is our hands-on rating. The Assembly is the community’s. Together they give you the full picture before you buy.

The Grain

Rated on build quality, comfort, materials, and fidelity to the original design – scored by our team after visiting the piece in-store.

The Assembly

An aggregated score from verified owner reviews. The more people rate a piece, the more confidence you can place in the number.

Retailer Coverage

As reviews are published, we’ll compare the same design across the retailers that offer it, so you can compare apples to apples, not just read one isolated review.

Community

Rate pieces you own, ask questions, and help build a resource that gets more useful with every review added.
